Fine Art

Since I was young, I have always had a passion for art.

Title: My Galaxy Year: 2018 Medium: Marker pen on paper Size: 420mm x 297mm

There is a little galaxy deep in everyone’s heart, a place where people can enjoy solitude, where they can store memorable moments, where otherworldly things can happen and where their imagination can run wild. This is my galaxy, each of the elements represents a cherished memory in my life, with doors to take me on board a journey with endless possibilities.

Title: Day Dreams Year: 2017 Medium: Masking tape on paper Size: 148mm x 210mm

This piece shows a perfectly beautiful scene in a day dreams of a young girl. The Chinese characters in the piece translate to “Life passes like a dream”. The traditional Chinese buildings stand in a green forest, surrounded by mist, with a group of birds flying to the distant mountains, representing the thoughts of the girl flying afar.

Title: Transient Summers Year: 2018 Medium: Watercolor on paper Size: 297mm x 420mm

The waves in the painting represent the traditional culture and memories disappearing into the tides of history. The whale in the air symbolizes my childhood and dreams. When I was little, I would always spend summer holidays at my grandma’s old house in a small village. Those summers were filled with memories of the deep azure sky and clouds that seemed at my fingertips. Years later, my grandma moved into the city and the old house was pulled down. What went away was not only the house, but along with the cradles of my childhood dreams. The same happened to most of the neighborhoods in my hometown, which witnessed the rapid urbanization in China in the last decades.

Title: Life with Cat Year: 2018 Medium: Oil paint on canvas Size: 85cm x 115cm

This painting was a class assignment, with the topic “Art Remade”, which meant we were to take inspirations from works of established artists to make our own piece. In this painting, I explored the theme of identity and draw inspiration from Johannes Vermeer’s theme of capturing a snapshot in time. In order to convey the theme of identity, I decided to paint a portrait of myself playing with my cat which is something I do in daily life. Inspired by Vermeer, I appear as if I were not posing for the artwork.

Title: My Girls Year: 2018 Medium: Oil paint on board Size: 18cm x 18cm

Below are oil paintings of my friends. Looking at these paintings, the viewer has a slight insight into their lives and their identities. Each girl is like an angle, unique in her own ways and having her own pursuits. They are beautiful, confident, playful, sparkling, and lively, just like stars in the galaxy, each showing the vitality of life.

Title: @ Generation Year: 2018 Medium: Micron fine line pens on paper Size: 297mm x 210mm

In this drawing, I highlight the unhealthy life style of many youths of today. In the last 5 years, social media and e-commerce developed very quickly in China. Many people, especially the younger generation, often lock themselves up at home, escaping the outside world, indulging in social media, and shopping on the e-commerce market. Instead of going to the restaurant, they order delivered food; instead of having face to face conversation, they chat online behind the screens. This piece reminds people that although new technologies of social media have brought convenience, people still need to use them sparingly.

Title: Glimmering Year: 2018 Medium: Digital image Size: 4000 x 6000px

This painting was also a class assignment, with the topic “Art Remade”, which meant we were to draw inspiration from established artists to make our own piece. In this piece, I was inspired by the smooth texture and the theme of feminism in Tamara De Lempicka’s painting. I painted over the original photo to make the texture of the piece smoother and painting-like. I focused on exploring the idea of feminism in the artwork through elements such as the book and the red lips. The smooth skin of the figure highlights that women are often given the standards of the perfect complexion. I have also included Shanghai as the background to give the artwork an idea of modernity and identity.

Title: The Flowers Year: 2017 Medium: Plastic bottle Size: 50-80mm each

In the piece “The Flowers”, I use the handmadeflowers to represent people in the society, as no flowers are the same, which symbolize that everyone is unique in their own ways but at the same time shares common grounds. Sinceall flowers in the piece are made of waste plastic bottles, I try to draw people’s attention to the importance of sustainable developmentand the harm that plastic has brought to the environment.
